SOL Review

I have found that the biggest problem with the SOL tests is that my students freeze up when they see word problems. To help ease this problem I took the released tests and broke them up into the 5 strands. Then I make copies for the students and we go over the questions highlighting what is important and talking about what the question is asking them to do. We also look to see if there are answers that can be eliminated right away. Then they work the problem out and we talk about how they solved them. This has worked in the past to help eleviate some of their anxieties.

  1. A four square graphic organizer lends itself quite well in getting students to not just understand word problems, but getting the student to just attempt to try. Making a four square graphic organizer is easy. Take a sheet of paper and fold it into fourths. In the upper left area, is the word problem. In the upper right area is where the student must restate the problem in their own words. What am I being asked to do? This piece is critical- the student has to make sense of the problem . Next,in the lower left area allows the student to record given information. For the visual student, this area is a get opportunity to draw out the given information. Lastly, in the lower right box, the student determines what information is needed to solve the problem as well as what operation is required.
