Team teaching

I would like to know what other teachers think about teaqm teaching. We have started doing this recently, and while starting out was difficult, it does seem an effective way to reach students. My partner and I put both of our classes in one room and divide up the areas of the lesson we each will cover. The teacher not actively leading the lesson, can then roam the room and help students stay on task and give on the spot aid.
Some of the difficulties have been managing the increased class size and making sure materials are ready-we do a lot of moving around, it isn''t possible to team teach each bell. I would sure like to hear if anyone has any ideas on improving the effectiveness of this.

  1. We team teach in a collaboration setting. I have one class period daily when a SPED teacher comes in to team teach. It works best when there is lots of advanced planning (which is hard to do sometimes). The best collaborative teachers I have had were teachers who I get along with outside of the classroom as well. So getting to know each other to just see how they present conversations help tremendously.
Also, it seems a little much, but at first deciding exactly who will do EVERY little thing in for that lessons (even whether you will answer questions back and forth or you will answer 2 for 2 etc). Then it will start to flow more and more smoothly the more you do it.

  2. We also have SPED teachers, but the team teaching I was writing about referred to one of the regular ed math teachers and I teaching the same class. Our SPED teachers are only in the classroom for about half a bell(they have to split times with other classes), and they don't normally attend planning so they aren't really a part of the normal lesson process.

  4. Sounds like you are giving it a good effort. I agree that it takes a lot of planning. However, having two "experts" in the room can be a huge bonus. Please keep us informed on how it works.
