Give them the answers
I just learned a great activity to help students have to think about why something is the answer. You give a class 8 or so answers. Then, you give them the questions that go with those answers. They have to then sit in small groups and discuss which answer goes with what. This way they have to justify answers, rather than come up with them.

I like this! We had a similar activity, a matching game for 7.20. They are given the verbal sentences on a card, and the algebraic on another, then match them up! We made it a race in groups of 3 or 4. The kids really got into it. I hadn't thought about extending it to other lessons though. I will have to try this out.
ReplyDeleteI did the same matching activity and the kids loved it. I like your idea of doing the same thing with answers and questions. It seems like it would be a great way to review Surface Area and Volume
ReplyDeleteThis sounds great!!!!! Especially with surface area and volume as my students know how to use the formulas but often use the wrong one. I love having them justify their work. I shows a deeper level or understanding.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I've gotta remember this one.
ReplyDeletetried it today with one class and loved it!
